pieces from winter/spring 2012

"Interior Exploration"--I don't know what to say about this piece really except that it's meant to touch on discovery or mystery, or something beautiful that takes us by surprise
"The Beauty Queen of La Vega"--I never actually met this little girl, but as soon as her eyes started looking back at me as I was painting, I couldn't help but get a bit teary-eyed
"Lowering the Drawbridge"--referencing the lowering of the drawbridge of the heart
"Planted"--more or less referencing how those times when we feel a part of ourselves is being forced to die or be buried can also be looked at as being planted
"Yalu's Prince Charming"--a little heart-breaker of a fellow named Freddie from a photo taken at his home out in the western Guatemalan highlands

New Stuff

This colored pencil/oil piece was done for an art show at the Athenaeum of many participants featuring the theme "Harmony." We each had a color swatch to include in our piece. Mine was a kind of Mediterranean aqua, already one of my favorite shades. For whatever reason the promise of blue robins' eggs nestled and waiting was my idea of harmony.

Refugee Bags

Working as a coffee roaster gives me ample supply of interesting materials to work with such as the jute coffee sacks which deliver the green coffee into our warehouse. See Refugee Bags for more info and the story behind their inception.

Kids from around the globe...

Drawn from a photo taken by a friend of a boy from an orphanage in liberia. The joy in his eyes is infectious...

Oil painting of a little bolivian girl

Oil Paintings on Canvas

I finished this painting following one of life's transition periods. It is in essence a portrait of the heart.

This painting originated with an image in my mind of a tree inside a circle with roots. The rest of it came mid-creation.

Seasons - A collection of six images in one, representing a handful of various "reminders", which seemed to come to me all at once following a trip to Ireland & Sarajevo this past fall

A Thin Silence - inspired by I Kings 19:9-13, verse 13 in particular, which speaks so much of the provoking intimacy of God

Portraits

A few custom orders from my portrait business, A True Rendering

A portrait ordered as a Christmas gift of a family's two young sons, adopted from Ethiopia

Though not as clear of a photograph as I'd like, this is a pencil drawing of a mother & child...

Again, not the best photograph, this fun piece of a couple I know was done in oils as an anniversary gift from one to the other...

Various Friend Portraits

A series of portraits done of friends during my time as a ministry intern

Lori, oils

Eric & Elizabeth, colored pencil

Tony, Amy, & Sam...doing nine likenesses on one small piece of paper was a bit more time-consuming than I anticipated...

Cutting a friend Kaleb's hair...

A friend Heather on a trip to Kenya, colored pencil...

This portrait in oils of my friend Kristi got me started in the launching of my little portrait business...
